The Four ‘I’s of Oppression
For this week’s blog I am explaining four quotes from ‘The Four ‘I’s of oppression.
I found this text to be a very good explanation of the four different types of oppressions. However I did have some other thoughts.
Quote One- “Ideological Oppression is rooted in value systems that allow people to dehumanize, exploit, or harm other individuals and groups”
Explanation- This quote was the definition of Ideological Oppression. It gave me a great understanding of it. I understood them that allows individuals to justify their hate and ignorance.
Quote two- “Internalized oppression addresses the way individuals absorb belief systems that then contribute to feelings of false supremacy to false deficiency within themselves in relation to others- especially those who are not part of the dominant social group.”
Explanation- This quote was a good explanation of what internalized oppression is. It helped me understand that is similar to an insecurity but about how society feels about your race or culture. I understood that it is oppression that the individual feel towards themselves instead of it being inflicted from others.
Quote three- “Interpersonal Oppression is the way internalized oppression is expressed between individuals or groups, both intentionally and accidentally.”
Explanation- This quote was extremely helpful as I have never heard the term before. Interpersonal Oppression is the exchange between people that feel internalized oppression perpetuating that and expressing it in conversation. It can be either intentional or accidental.
Quote four- “As a policy and practice, test scores inequitably keep low income - particularly black, indigenous, or other people of color - students from accessing educational credentials and related job opportunities.”
Explanation- I chose to explain this quote because I completely disagree with its thought processes and want to expand on it. I interpreted this quote as college requirements being slanted against people of color for simply existing. That having requirements for people is ‘oppressive’ for holding people to a standard. On top of that, I understood that low income people of color are worse off than white low income people just because they are people of color. An SAT, ACT, or any other standardized test has absolutely no idea who will be taking the test and if they are people of color or not. To claim that being required to take a test oppresses people of color is to claim that people of color are less likely to study or prepare or are just bad test takers. This is an insanely large claim and a HUGE stereotype to place across people of color

Love how you set this up. Good job!
